Penguins are back!
Every year, like clockwork, the first couple hundred emperor penguins return to Atka Bay for the start of their breeding season. Its always marvels me how they find their breeding spot down to the meter (just in front of our observatory) in an ever changing icescape.

At the start of the emperor penguin chick fledging season five colonies have already been affected by early sea ice breakup. The purple dots below show which ones. Not as bad as the last two years, but worse than average.
