Really heartening to attend the neighborhood #NoKings protest today in Highland Park with my dear friend @sazeracla.bsky.social (and a cameo by @wendycarrillo.bsky.social with her Hamilton-inspired sign!)

(If you’re in any of these and want a copy without your face blurred/covered, hmu)

So thrilled to see the @watchduty.org app won the Social Impact award at #WWDC this year

After weeks of prep, we finally have fruit trees in the ground: a Lisbon lemon, a Pixie tangerine, and a “cocktail” with Blenheim apricots, Alberta peaches, Santa Rosa plums, and Fantasia nectarines. It was painful to remove their fruit but I know they need to focus their energy on roots first.

Today I learned: removing astroturf isn’t like removing carpet. It has huge spikes every 3 inches! Spouse did most of the heavy pulling but we both have countless blisters (despite wearing heavy duty gloves). But once the fruit trees are in, we won’t complain. 🤭

I’ve literally lost track of what phase this is of our drainage project: Today we installed a literal ton of gravel and river rock in an excavated dry creekbed at the back of our yard. Please send dry thoughts for our back cottage — if this doesn't fix it, I freaking give up.

Just watched We Want the Funk, a great new documentary on PBS — they did an amazing job with talking to actual experts and gathering really superb archival footage.

Hey #cookingSky, the fine folks at Burlap & Barrel are having a pre-tariff sale, 10–20% off everything. (They’ve promised not to cut payments to suppliers in response to tariffs + they’re a public benefit corp.) You can also get $5 your first purchase with this link: go.refrl.co/r/Tbn7X4FknROc

Since I always crab about #LosAngelesTransit, here are some flowers: Metro Micro got me to the train for $2.50, and Metrolink got me from Glendale to BUR for $4.50. The whole thing took about an hour, including the 4-minute walk from the station to the terminal.

The #losangeles sky today is unusual and lovely. Lots of brindle clouds along the horizon, and a ln enormous and well-defined halo around the sun.

I get the vibe (from those last 2 links) that not a lot of @food4less.bsky.social shoppers use their website — or, more likely, that Kroger just DGAF about that demographic’s user experience.

Red beans and cornbread, from Pableaux’s recipes. I know he’s already gathered a table full of new and old friends wherever he is tonight — wouldn’t be Monday otherwise.

Us, too! (See, he’s still bringing people together.)

They’re done now. Just waiting for the rice. 💔

Pableaux made this photo of us in
2019. I pretty strongly disliked it at the time. But with 6 years of hindsight, I'm sure glad it exists. To be able to remember what it was like to have him focused (literally and figuratively) on you is such a gift.
The world is a darker place without his light.

I’m sorry if this is how you learn that the beloved photographer and gatherer of kindred spirits Pableaux Johnson has left us. And I’m even more sorry if you never had the chance to meet him. You missed out on a one-of-a-kind human being.

Ended up with 6 extra egg yolks after last weekend’s caramel buttercream adventures. Time for some ice cream!

It started. And it’s the most wonderful sound! #LArain
January 26, 2025 at 6:55 AM
Y’all, it’s supposed to start raining in 5 minutes! (To put my excitement in perspective, it is Day 18 of the #lafires and 8 months since our last precipitation.)

Really delicious dinner at Queen St. in Eagle Rock / Highland Park tonight for Day 2 of spouse’s birthday celebrations: a dozen *immaculately shucked* oysters, shrimp & grits; not shown: an amazing pair of buffalo-fried rockfish collars which were not photogenic but were delicious and interesting!
