Cornelia Fort was flight instructing at Pearl Harbor on Dec 7, 1941. She was among the first to join when the US Army Air Forces recruited women to fly in Sept 1942. She was among the first killed in March 1943 when another plane struck hers. 🗃️ @lawrenceodonnell.msnbc.com @maddowblog.msnbc.com

She was ferrying a plane for the U.S. Army Air Forces when the wing of an aircraft being flown by another pilot (an inexperience young man) struck the cockpit of her plane, either instantly killing her or disabling her. Her plane spun into the ground and she was killed. She was the second woman pilot, of 38 total, killed flying for her country. After 25 years of work, including hundreds of oral histories, Landdeck published the book in 2020. It follows the women from the 1920s and 30s, through their fight to fly and serve in the war years, to how they adjusted to the postwar years (they were not allowed to continue to fly for the USAAF and they were not allowed to fly for the airlines because they were women), their fight to be recognized as Veterans of WWII in the 1970s, and our fight to get them back into Arlington National Cemetery in 2016. I promised these women I would never again allow them to be forgotten. They will NOT be removed from history on my watch.
