I’ve been losing sleep over conversations I’m having with some business leaders I’ve always looked to for strength. People who have built incredible companies and who I count on for clarity when things get cloudy. And what I’m hearing is scaring me because it feels like a quiet defeat about Canada. These leaders aren’t complainers or pessimists by nature. These are builders. But they’re talking like it’s over and the US has won. Like we should just accept decline and resign ourselves to never being more. I totally get the frustration. Ottawa has fumbled for decades. The bureaucracy is more than maddening. The regulatory maze gets worse every year. We all feel it and are really tired of it. But when did we decide that was reason enough to quit? Governments don’t build countries, people do. Some of our best companies were built during recessions, trade wars, and political chaos. They didn’t succeed because conditions were perfect! They succeeded because a leader refused to accept that circumstances define outcomes. What I think we need from biz leaders right now is to stop pointing fingers and start pointing the way forward. Your resignation isn’t just personal to you because it influences everyone around you. When we give up, others follow. This post is for all the leaders on here who post negative comments and complaints about the state of affairs as if that will somehow help. And yes, I’ve been guilty of it too. Maybe in a future post share what you’re actually doing. Not what you wish government would do. What YOU are doing. Building something that makes Canada stronger? Share it. Please. Make it real. Because right now, people are looking around wondering if they should panic or push forward. They’re looking to leaders for the answer and, yes, for positive actions and reactions. Courage isn’t the absence of fear. It’s building anyway even when you’re scared. Canada needs leaders who build anyway. If not us, then who? If not now, then when?
