Before our screening of ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER. It is showing at the Vista Theater, in existence since 1923. It’s one of 4 theaters in the world projecting it in VistaVision on “platters”. It Is the first film to do so since 1961.

Second day in a row, I’ve been moved to share one of my modest drawings.

Philando Castile should have turned 42 today.

He was a school cafeteria worker who frequently paid for lunches for students who owed money or could not afford to pay. He was know for his caring, loving nature.

Don’t let the smooth taste fool you, his brotha with his charm, wit, fighting skills, and smarts simply shines too brightly for some.

Now you don’t get to be my age and not develop an ear for what many people mean when they use words like: urban, thug, woke, and DEI. They are avoiding saying what they really mean. So watching the film I was struck by what the REAL problem is: comparative obscure hero Mr. Terrific is too terrific.

A thread

Okay. I feel obliged to check-in after actually seeing James Gunn’s SUPERMAN. We loved it. It is an old school epic superhero romp. Only in 2025 would an earnest and diligent Superman be so subversive and divisive.

Only a nation that now holds the “golden rule” of treating others as one would want to be treated in utter contempt would label Superman as “woke”. Only Americans that no longer want any part “your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free” would look aghast at the Man of Steel.

In 1938 when Superman made his iconic debut, his first order of business is saving an innocent woman scheduled for execution from the electric chair. Later in that issue he confronts a domestic abuser.

Superman/Kal-El, at his core, is an illegal alien. He arrived to this planet from a civilization lost to him and devotes himself to service. He is an invulnerable being that can fly, move in an instant, and melt things with his gaze. He could rule the planet, but he chooses to be a public servant.
