Frances Teresa Stuart, who would become the Dutchess of Richmond and Lennox has been a central figure in my research since my undergraduate dissertation - Painted by Peter Lely as Diana in the Windsor Beauties at age 14, she was regarded as one of the foremost beauties at Court.

The image for Brittania here comes from a 1667 medal commissioned to celebrate the Peace of Breda, (temporarily) ending war between the English and the Dutch. The medal was made by Jan Rottiers, and Pepys recorded seeing the medal at his goldsmiths on 25 February 1667.

Better pictures to come, but have received the coolest early Birth-mukkah (December baby things) gift to date from my parents!

This 1673 Copper Farthing features Charles II on the front, and an image of Brittania on the back. Keep reading if you want to know why this makes me so happy

Working on my chapter on the Fashionable Life Cycle leads me to some wonderful visual sources - This painting by Pieter de Hooch, c. 1668-72, shows a woman helping her child learn to walk using leading strings. I love the extra head padding!

Still unbelievably excited that the School of Historical Dress purchased the pair of seventeenth century stays that recently went up for auction - I can’t wait for dress historians (including myself, hopefully) to get the chance to study this amazing garment in person!
