Indeed. It's a perfectly valid form of TV drama that - as you say - concentrates more on the quality of the script and performances than how it looks although there's no reason it can't look good too. I still don't know what 'cinematic' actually means. It's a rather vague and high-falutin' term.

Channel 5 have announced they're reviving the Play For Today format in early 2026. I hope they have the courage to perform the shows from start to finish as though they were live, but it's technically challenging and not many know how to do it any more. www.theguardian.com/media/2025/a...
