I'd like to see one or two large traffic islands with some plant pots or some other nice things which allow easier crossing and breaks up the see of asphalt

Yes it would be great to have less of a huge area of tarmac there. However, I think it's unlikely to change soon, 1. The council have no money to mess around with random junctions which don't have a specific acute problem, 2. There are many driveways there which need to be considered.
