Pathfinder Art #1: Chesley Bonestell’s art embodies the spirit of the BIS motto - “From imagination to reality.” It might be termed “pathfinder art” pointing the way to worlds which human beings might one day explore, courtesy of machines they might one day build. @artistburns.bsky.social

Remembering the ongoing cultural impact of “2001: A Space Odyssey” on the birthday of Keir Dullea, who got to say one of the most famous (and enigmatic) lines in the history of the cinema: “My, god! It’s full of stars!” Still wondering what it really meant. #KeirDullea #Odyssey #BIS

Happy birthday to Helen Sharman. The first Britain to travel into space: an eight day mission, including six on the Mir Space Station. Pre-flight training included 18 months in Star City and having to content with the world’s media! Still seizing the moment! @artistburns.bsky.social #BIS #Odyssey

On this day in 1991, Helen Sharman made history as the first Briton in space, spending eight days onboard the Mir space station. A chemist by profession, she conducted important research in biology, physics, and chemistry during her time in orbit. A literal trailblazer.

In the May issue of “Odyssey” - in the 1960s, “New Worlds” magazine heralded a more mature approach to SF, and showcased work by authors such as Michael Moorcock, Brian Aldiss, Thomas M. Disch, Harry Harrison and John Brunner. Still the template for any serious SF based lit mag. Still impactful.
