That's an interesting one, because it could probably work in the 21st century, thanks to practically instantaneous communication. It'd be a weird set of national priorities, but you could still have practical democratic representation. In the 20th century, I don't think that works well at all

While compensation was not good (in typical British understatement), I think it's fair to argue a compensated ending of slavery is better than a continuation. Slavery as an institution was still ended, so it's still abolition IMO, even if not one to be proud of

Depending on how the stats are worked out (and individual cases recorded), it could be to avoid duplication. I wouldn't be shocked if the majority of BTP murder investigations were also Met investigations

Not to mention that if you apply their rules strictly, who even IS British? Where would you draw the line? It's madness to think there's a point in history at which people can't become British, and people from before then are but people from after aren't

Britain wouldn't be Britain without immigration and asylum. It would be (at best) a pale shadow of itself, and I really don't get how people who view a Britain without immigrants can view themselves as patriotic

While this isn't really the point, would "where does your name come from?" have the same effect? There have been quite a few times that I've been curious about someone's name, but haven't wanted to ask because I know it comes across as "you aren't British to me"

I'm not going to go with the whole "Chamberlain also supported rearmament" thing, though that's also valid.
Instead, I'll point out that at the next threshold (Poland 1939), Chamberlain actually stood his fucking ground! Because he'd learned that you really do need to stand up to fascism
