The only true competition for the KTM 500 is the Husky 501 which has linkage rear shock. The 650L is an air cooled dinosaur. The KTM financial problem is mostly solved. By used. I have a 2017 and they will go 15k miles before a rebuild.... Spring it for your weight and get an after market ECU.

Well, I have a KTM 300xc-w (2T), a KTM 350exc and a KTM 500exc. The 500 does it all. 1000mi Baja runs loaded. It does the Idaho BDR. It does 2 day Mojave 500mi rides. $15k all in with aftermarket armor and decent tires.
