It is indeed ridiculous but Trump has a bee in his bonnet with Canada and is making repeated and serious economic threats. So Canadians aren’t finding the 51st state thing to be comedic. I don’t think Americans fully appreciate this yet.

I suspect it’s because it would result in less parity, which would result in fewer teams in contention, which would (be perceived to) result in less interest and therefor money.
