The U.S. political divide today is clearly displayed in the data cited. Excellent column. As a long-time reader and fan of the Washington Post, that I recently cancelled my subscription (as did thousands of others) does not bode well for the paper's current course. The Right will never trust it.

When I served in the Department of Justice from 1988-2006, the Hatch Act was enforced. Federal employees executed their jobs in a non-partisan manner, as professionals who served the public good. The rule of law no longer applies. Ethical rules and obligations are dismissed. This is disgraceful.

Hey Bernie - I greatly appreciate your work and excellent baseball analysis.

Great analysis Bernie. Mozeliak deserves a lot of credit for what was, overall, an excellent run as GM. But given the organization's negligence in failing to stay up-to-date with analytics & technology, etc., it is time for a change. I'm excited for the Chaim Bloom era to start.

Obama was not perfect - no one is. But Congress is to blame for thwarting Obama's desire to close Guantanamo and no one has succeeded in resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. But as the essay discusses, Obama brought a dignified presence to the oval office, which I greatly miss.

When I was prosecuted violent crime in DC in the 1990s, homicides peaked at 482 (1991) during the crack epidemic and violent crime was rampant. In 2024, DC had 187 homicides and violent crime hit a 30-year low. Crime is always a legitimate concern, but the "crisis" is yet another Trump fabrication.

Amen! Not only is he destroying everything decent about this country, reversing every New Deal and Great Society program from Medicare/Medicaid to civil rights, environmental protection, and poverty assistance, but he is a personal disgrace to the office he holds, an undignified, indecent bully.

Since our founding, immigrants have always enriched and strengthened American life. Demonizing immigrants devalues the very essence of what it is to be an American. Trump’s immigration policies represent the worst elements of our character. ehlersoneverything.blogspot.com/2025/07/a-na...

Great work by ProPublica. This is such an important story and it is important the spotlight continues to shine on all aspects of Trump's cruel, heartless, and irrational immigration enforcement efforts. I am ashamed of America for its complicity in the abuse and barbarism inflicted on these men.

There is no longer any question that DOJ is engaged in political retribution. They are frivolously attacking SUCCESSFUL lawsuits, one against Trump resulting in a $450 million verdict for proven fraud, and one that resulted in court mandated reforms of the NRA. Bondi should be disbarred.

All of your suggestions are spot on, Bernie. Bloom needs to know what he has in Walker, Gorman, and his other young players to determine whether they are part of 2026 or trade chips. Herrera in LF makes sense. Arenado cannot be the 3B next year, period, even if Dewitt needs to eat $42 million.

These false allegations of antisemitism ignore the moral sincerity of students and scholars opposed to the deaths of tens of thousands of civilians and displacement of two million people, mass starvation, and total destruction of Gaza. It serves only to undermine legit efforts to fight antisemitism.

I respectfully disagree. I share your frustration about Bezos but appreciate the Post's many excellent journalists and reporters. I also read the NYT, Guardian, TNR, Forward, Philadelphia Inquirer, and others. Although imperfect, they all do their best to responsibly report the verifiable facts.
