Rickettsia conorii causes Mediterranean spotted fever (MSF), endemic in the Mediterranean basin. Transmitted by the brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, MSF presents with fever, rash, and an eschar ("tache noire"). Doxycycline is the treatment of choice.

Histoplasmosis, a fungal infection, is caused by inhaling H. capsulatum spores from contaminated soil (bird/bat droppings). Often mild or asymptomatic, it is severe, even fatal, in immunocompromised individuals, like those with HIV/AIDS or transplant recipients.

Sin Nombre virus (SNV), discovered in the U.S. Four Corners region, causes hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), a life-threatening disease. "Bartonella bacilliformis infection results in Carrion's disease in humans. In the 1st phase of infection it causes a hemolytic fever "Oroya fever" with a case fatality rate of 90% in untreated patients, followed by a chronic phase resulting in angiogenic skin lesions (verruga peruana)."
