The South Dakota House of Representatives will be voting on a bill to require posting and teaching Ten Commandments in every K-12 classroom in the state.

“In Teachers We Trust” is an outstanding guide to teaching like Finnish teachers. Why? Because Finland’s students have out performed their international peers for decades. Our district is gradually adopting many of these methods with very positive results.

Finland built their highly successful education system to provide balanced, holistic, and child-focused education to all children and built it upon the system in the United Stares. Their system has been highly successful and we have much to learn from them today. #edusky

Finnish teachers often loop with their students, staying with them through multiple grades, to build deeper relationships with learners. Research tells us strong relationships are the most powerful motivator of academic success. Perhaps we ought to consider looping here. #edusky

South Dakota is sparsely populated with no shortage of small towns with a schoolhouse and not much more. This year will be hard for them with a sharp decline in state funding, millions set aside for private schools, and new school vouchers being considered in the legislature. #edusky

We are in the 2nd year of our transition toward teaching more like Finland. The first year we started mixing students from different grades in design teams. It was a great success. This year we are incorporating brain breaks. I’ve heard nothing but thank you from parents and the community. #edusky

I just finished reading this book and strongly recommend it to everyone interested in public K-12 education.
