I know it’s a freebie but worth checking it’s been serviced regularly, e.g. a cam/timing belt is recommended to be changed every 5 years, it’s an expensive job but can mean a new engine if it fails.

Had an Ibiza round about that time, not sure about the fun part but certainly solid and reliable, they were built mainly from VW parts and were great bang for buck at the time.
