If you’re interested in the minutiae of letterforms, typographic principles and their historic context, the book I’d recommend reading as a (dense) primer is:

The Elements of Typographic Style by Robert Bringhurst (get the 4th/latest edition as it better covers digital type)

The proportions are wrong on the White House refit, that’s one reason why it looks bad. You can have all the half-inch brass you want, but it will look a tasteless mess if the proportions are out. Elements are too big or too close.

The Astoria proportions feel balanced and aesthetically correct.

Any idea why this episode hasn’t made its way to my feed?

Looking forward to DJing at Moovin Festival tomorrow. I’ll be playing a chilled set on the Party Trike 2—6pm ish.

Bruno Fernandes (pictured here with his wife, daughter and Donny van de Beek) is staying at United!

Great news.

Over on the other place, I keep being fed video adverts about special tweezers for removing blackheads and in-growing hairs.

I find the footage both repulsive and strangely compelling, so I probably dwell on the video.

This means I see them every time access my feed.

It’s a morbid fascination!

I started the New Year with a day of culture…

Morning:
The Moonwalkers
(Lightroom)
— Immersive storytelling at its best.

Afternoon:
Electric Dreams
(Tate Modern)
— Optical illusion made real.

Evening:
Poor Things
(Film)
— A grotesque and unique abstract masterpiece. Stone is amazing.

Another great pod Ed, and nice to hear Paul again. Happy new Year to you both.

Just a heads up, you mentioned no gambling ads. I think I’ve had a bookies ad in each of the podcasts since you started the adverts. There’s one in the latest pod too.

And can anyone else see a young Alex Ferguson in Manuel Ugarte?

Twitter. The place where a person makes a perfectly good joke. But people misread the joke as a statement and then think they can add their punchline, even though the punchline was the last word of the original joke.

Feels like this team is getting close to Amorim’s first 11.

It’ll be interesting to see how the Jaguar concept translates into production.

The low ride height, long bonnet and ‘fitment’ of the wheels in the arches — which make the concept look so aggressive — would be highly impractical in reality.

The side profile still retains some Jaguar shape.

Up from 13th to 9th in the league (if we hold on). Need to push on and boost our goal difference which was 0 before today’s game.

More goal in the 2nd half?

Don’t see anyone predicting this line up.

Good bit of cobweb-shaking at WHP last night.

Thoughts on the new Jaguar logo?

Gutted. Felt like we were getting close.

Frustrating start to the queue.

New Order - Movement.

Designed by Peter Saville in 1981

Saville’s design was inspired by (or repurposed) Fortunato Depero’s poster for the Futurismo exhibition in Trentino, Italy, which was originally designed in 1932

With big underlying themes, such as love over logic and never giving up, but knowing when to let go, it’s a film packed with creativity, heart and craft.

And it’s visually stunning too, every scene looks amazing. The colours and lighting are luscious and the brushstroked backgrounds bring an organic touch often missing in CGI films.

I usually find DreamWorks animations lack the emotional depth, world building and the beauty that Pixar is known for. The gap between the two studios is reflected at the Oscars, where Pixar lead DreamWorks 11-2.

But this is a heartfelt, honest story of identity, emotional belonging and connection.
