If this happens in a gradual way yes. What if you have a rapid devaluation? If you have a remaining mortgage that isn’t covered by the sale of your devalued house, would you be able to move house and take the mortgage with you, or would you be stuck till you pay off enough of the mortgage?

What would the impact be on house prices? I’m guessing it would lead them to drop. Is this why political parties stay clear of it because many voters are invested in housing?
