Totally agreed, names are my example of how this really, really isn't good enough. Even known names. If you're looking at context and it's got a J and it's a guy's name...is it Jon or Jim or Jack or Joe or...? You can't know from cues.

It's the "I'm not making light of this terrible thing, I'm making sure it STICKS WITH YOU and gets PASSED ALONG TO OTHERS SO THEY ALSO KNOW" punchline, and I love them, and I love the people who construct them.

My dad was put on comma probation, because he loved commas not wisely but too well. Someone told him that you should put a comma wherever you breathe, and he was a Minnesota man; like lace, his speech was ornamented at least as much by absence as presence.

They are being not only careless and callous with author well-being, they're being careless with the reputations of an editor I've worked with since I was a literal college student and two more I've worked with for years and highly value. It is just infuriating.
