When we first started dating, he only ever said bitch-wife to make fun of the men who married women they clearly didn’t really like - a jab at the idea of a man who thinks his wife asking for anything makes her unreasonable. We’d laughed together about it, said we loved each other too much to ever be that mean and bitter, that we’d always do anything for each other. I'd believed it too, when he'd said he'd do anything for me. I’m not sure when it changed, when he started to use it for real. It was slow, I guess. The kind of creep you don’t really notice until you hear it one day and it hits you that it isn't funny anymore. That it doesn’t mean what it used to. He still uses it the old way sometimes. Just enough that I can’t ever be entirely sure whether he’s really calling Steph and Amber bitches, or whether he’s mocking Mike and Jake. I like to think it’s the latter. I’m not sure when I stopped asking for things, either. When I started to fear becoming a bitch-wife, even while refusing to admit he means it. Texas is a state built on enduring. Enduring drought, choking heat, bitter cold, sweat in your eyes and dirt that tastes like blood in your mouth. An endless rocky, barren, bitter landscape that refuses to change, and people that refuse to accept it won't ever change. I am a true Texan.
