It's also a long-established Ashkenazi tradition to change the name of a young person facing a terrible illness to Chaya/Chayim (life), or Alte/Alter (old), some say to confuse the angel of death.

Traditionally an aliyah, but people are creative about finding/creating rituals that are meaningful! There are some great posts on Ritualwell from folks who have shared their own rituals, sometimes including mikvah, which I've done with two congregants. ritualwell.org/ritual_topic...
