Finally got around to watching the first of the 忍びの者 films tonight (Shinobi: Band of Assassins). It's a bit of a winding origin story for Ishikawa Goemon, with Iga machinations and the rampaging Oda as driving forces for the plot.

A little messy, but definitely a key piece of ninja film canon.

森崎書店の日々 is back in print, and after tackling the English translation, I definitely want to read the original as part of this ongoing reading project.

A rare JLPT practice question that caters to Australians like myself.

While Pokemon/DBZ were some of my first tastes of anime (and few smaller things as well), ultimately it was Evangelion that got me into anime. Between the animation, music and characterisation, I was intrigued.

That, Bubblegum Crisis 2040 and Martian Successor Nadesico were the trio that hooked me.

My Kanji knowledge isn't quite up to standard for more formal history texts yet, but I think this new arrival might be a starting point for Bakumatsu and Shinsengumi reading.

I'm coming up on a year since my last trip to Japan, and given the health of family, it might be a while...

I'm leaning into language study in the mean time, and it's time to tackle some translated literature as well.

Got some Natsume, Dazai and Akutagawa ordered, and I'm reading some Edogawa.

Decided I'd look back at some of the spookier cartoons I saw when I was a kid, and one of the most unsettling at the time was a Mr. Magoo episode adapting Frankenstein.

There's a fever dream sequence featuring this imagery while stomping, laughing/moaning and organ music plays. Intense for the time

From the camera roll #5: There's a special place in my heart for the streets around Chayamachi, particularly at night.

I remember re-watching the opening news room segment of Dawn of the Dead at the height of the 'demic, and it knocked the wind out of me.

The effect is similar in this day and age.

Decided to keep up the momentum from Night last night with Dawn of the Dead (1978) as the next re-watch for this spooky season.

While some elements of Dawn haven't aged as well, much like Night, the social commentary definitely... hits hard in 2025.

Harry Cooper from Night of the Living Dead (1968) remains one of the best antagonists in all of horror cinema.

Arrogant, prideful, controlling, inflexible and ruled by a combination of fear and a desire to be in charge. Likewise, the sheer hubris of this man and its effects are profound.
October 9, 2025 at 10:10 AM
Decided to rewatch an all-time favourite tonight for the ongoing, if so far sporadic, spooky season viewing.

Night of the Living Dead still remains a hell of a thing.

Following a recommendation from an article by @japanesetalk.bsky.social, I've started reading 「ずっと前から好きでした」and 20+ pages in, this is definitely looking like a fantastic text to bridge between manga and novels, and a good example of comprehensible input for anime/manga fans.
October 8, 2025 at 11:57 AM
Felt like it was time to read some short stories for the spooky season, starting with Edogawa Rampo.

Techbro: Why bother learning a language when you can just get [mythical/magical machine-based translation service] to do it for you?

If you're ever in Kappa Yokocho in Umeda, Ramen Kotan was one of my go-to places. It's a nice, quiet corner in a busy area. Also, the rumble from the Hankyu line overhead is an added little bit of ambience.

Decided to dip into the entertainment budget during a sale of a particular label (Radiance). The last couple of months have been rough, but this is a hell of a Japanese cinema haul, particularly in the ghost/horror canon.
October 6, 2025 at 2:35 AM
Read about a third of Eric Ozawa's translation of Days at the Morisaki Bookshop, and I'm definitely finding the book to be timely, muck like Wenders' Perfect Days. I also have a massive spot spot for Kanda and Jinbocho.

I tried to pick up a Japanese copy last year, but it was out of print.

Spooky season viewing continues tonight. I'll be revisiting Ju-on (2002) for the first time in about 20 years.

Intermediate Japanese reading tip: There will be bumps in the road, and even sections of works that are generally accessible may prove challenging.

At times like this, keep reading, get the gist, and verify afterwards. This is how literacy building works, and this is just part of the process.

Honestly, if you're interested in making art, go for it. It's been one of the best decisions I made for myself in the past few years, and it's an interesting journey.

Also, it's about time and practice. On the left is April 2024 (2nd drawing on a tablet) and on the right is September 2025.

Got inspired by a fellow Meathead artist, and I threw this one together on a day off. Decided to go more cartoony this time, but still working on the poster look. #meatpaint

Happy spooky season people!

Progress shots in reply.

Initial impressions of Silent Hill f after an hour: the combat is a little janky, but as a fan of survival horror in Japanese settings, this one is potentially an all-timer for me.

It's also fits RIGHT in the cross section of my research interests and general love of horror.
