Two reviews of Tom Lehrer’s concerts from the New York Times, one from 1958 and the other from 1959. The latter he would quote from the stage in many subsequent concerts, repeating: “Mr. Lehrer’s muse was not fettered by such inhibiting factors as taste.”
A review of Tom Lehrer’s concert in Carnegie Hall published by the New York Times on April 19, 1058. A quote: “Tom Lehrer, a song satirist, last night attracted to Carnegie Hall an enthusiastic audience that completely filled the auditorium and overflowed onto most of the stage space. Mr. Lehrer, a brash, bespectacled young man, took a sardonic view of various types of popular songs — the southern type, the college alma mater type, the Christmas carol type, the folk type and others. His favorite satirical device, the reverse twist, was occasionally amusing. But, since most of his songs were almost completely dependent on this for their humor, the device became somewhat wearing. A review of Tom Lehrer’s concert at Town Hall published by the New York Times on February 9, 1959. It says, in its entirety, “The tide of ‘sick jokes’ may be ebbing but Tom Lehrer’s ‘sick songs’ are still at flood. At Town Hall on Saturday evening Mr. Lehrer regaled a large and appreciative audience with his merry ditties of disease, dismemberment and death. It was the sort of program in which ‘necrophiliac’ is a very funny word. Mr. Lehrer’s muse was not fettered by such inhibiting factors as taste as his eulogized that lovable character, the old dope peddler, or sung of the joys of poisoning pigeons in the park. Yet, despite his obsessive interest in disintegration, Mr. Lehrer has a worthily witty song or two in his repertory and an occasional perceptive comment crept into his monologues between songs. ‘You people are sick, you know,’ he told his chortling audience as he concluded one particularly grim opus. The remark drew enthusiastic applause.”
