"But the first 30 minutes of this movie is a blueprint for how to consider the entire film. One Battle After Another doesn’t fully capture the hellishness of the present so much as look at it and not lie about what it sees. The discomfort that arises in watching Perfidia rat on her comrades or Lockjaw proclaim his rapacious desire for Black girls courses through the finale. Anderson leaves just as much, perhaps even too much, at the level of conjecture, and in these voids confusion brews. What are we to make of the bitter absurdities that define today’s America, and what should we expect a medium like film to do in representing it? A film will speak politically whether its makers intend for it to or not, but storytellers shouldn’t be compelled to give neat, prescriptive messaging perfectly calibrated to the moral temperature of an audience. Anderson’s script might grant only the wisps of Black women’s interiority, but in that blank space, the potent skills of its actresses are able to flourish. Political prescription isn’t the point; teasing out the humanity of these people is." Holed up at Rockfield studios in remote rural Wales, in February 1994 the Stone Roses were in crisis. Their attempt to record their second album looked doomed to fail yet again – but that wasn’t their most pressing problem. The immediate challenge was it was 3am and they’d smoked all their weed. It was at critical times like this that their inimitable bass player, Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield, would prove his mettle. Purloining a nearby farm tractor, Mani set across the fields in the inky blackness to Monnow Valley, another residential studio a few miles away, where a new Manchester group called Oasis were working on their debut LP. With the fast band asleep, the light-fingered bassist broke in and lifted their stash, before trundling merrily home on his ‘borrowed’ John Deere.

Edith Sitwell met Marilyn Monroe while visiting Hollywood in 1953. Of course it was meant to be a culture clash but they got on very well and met again 3 years later, when Marilyn came to England with Arthur Miller.
