This is a crucial point. Still relatively few economists are explicitly trained on this point, and too many econ papers show it.

Well there it is. I received this yesterday.

Data paid for and owned by the US public, now impounded and inaccessible—illegally, arbitrarily, indefinitely.

Anyone seeking ‘efficiency’ would at most seek an alternative data host.

Anyone seeking to suppress academic speech would… do this.

Many of the world's best and brightest young people once came to study in the United States, fueling our global innovation powerhouse.

They now know that if they come, they can be seized by secret police off the street, at any moment—without charges, trial, or appeal, with absolute discretion.
Marco Rubio on Rumeysa Ozturk: "We revoked her visa ... once you've lost your visa, you're no longer legally in the United States ... if you come into the US as a visitor and create a ruckus for us, we don't want it. We don't want it in our country. Go back and do it in your country."

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the government revoked the visa of Rumeysa Ozturk, an international student at Tufts University who was detained by U.S. immigration agents on Tuesday. Ozturk, a Turkish citizen and a Muslim, has written essays in support of Palestinian rights. nyti.ms/4janPRO

This is an illegal action by the US Administration. USAID is Congressionally mandated as an independent agency. It is not a small office of the State Department.

Those now choosing to ignore their duty to our laws, whether Conservative or Liberal, will miss them when they have lost meaning.
Currently: Letter by letter, crews remove the "U.S. Agency for International Development" signage from its HQ — a striking visual of the abrupt dismantling of USAID, which was est. by JFK in 1961 & delivered humanitarian aid around the world for decades (a small fraction will be folded into State)

This “light-touch” program proves that it is possible to address stereotypes and group differences head-on while fostering both understanding and cohesion.
It’s a model that could scale to other groups or countries facing similar challenges. 🌍

2. Supporting economic growth abroad won’t reduce immigration, it will probably increase it.

Conventional wisdom in policy circles is that investing in and promoting development will reduce migration. @mclem.org & @marimendola.bsky.social show that this is wrong: voxdev.org/topic/migrat...
Who migrates from developing countries?
New data from 99 developing countries challenges conventional wisdom in development policy. People whose labour has higher returns at home are more likely to migrate.
