A classic Grand Canyon scene - mules hauling food and goods into Phantom Ranch and hauling refuse out. They have been active on the trails for 125+ years.

Canoe camping along the Green River in Canyonlands. The sunrise on red rock cliffs is always memorable.

The lush environment in the Verde Valley of northern Arizona. This is a riparian habitat along the Verde River that explodes with plant life each spring. The Green is short lived as the area becomes crispy brown and dry once the summer heat arrives.

Lunch break during plant studies at a water hole in the Sonoran Desert. Water = life everywhere; it's especially true in arid country.

An early morning hike along the Colorado River as the sun slowly shows itself. A quiet, peaceful time.

A brush shelters with a reflective fire wall we made to demonstrate how to stay warm during an unexpected night out. Part of a wilderness survival course I co-taught.

An off trail arch in southern Utah. A bit of scrambling is involved but it's definitely worth the effort.

A classic scene in the Ponderosa forest on the Colorado Plateau. No matter the crowds elsewhere, one is always able to find solitude in this forest.

Cleome serrulata, also known as Mountain Bee Plant. Pollinators love this plant. Its leaves are edible and make good wild greens. Look for it in disturbed soil along roads and trails between 6,000' and 8,000' in the Southwest.

Enjoying a break above treeline in the Colorado Rockies in Jiuly. This is peak wildflower season - a magical time of the year!

On the Colorado Plateau, there are slot canyons and then there are... cracks. This little detour with a group of friends found us scrambling up an un-named side crack.

The Vermillion Cliffs are aptly named as this scene is repeated often at sunrise. A wild and less visited part of the Colorado Plateau in northern Arizona.

Foraging Banana Yucca (Yucca bacata) fruits. Once roasted, they taste 'similar' to sweet potato - but not nearly as sweet. Once roasted, I have dried these and used them thoughout the year as a rehydrated food.

Bursera microhylla is near the top of the list of my favorite healing plants. Trips into the Sonoran are more memorable when I can hang out with these folks. An excellent recent publication provides much of the additional info I have long wondered about for this genus.

Aspen & Geranium in the Colorado Rockies. The higher elevation means a shorter summer and bloom time which concentrates the peak wildflower season. A great situation for plant photographers!

My favorite image from the Boundary waters Canoe Area in Minnesota. The area is remote enough there is no wifi/cell coverage, travel is paddle-only, no motors. It's all flat water, no excitement from running the rapids. One can feel the frazzled nervous system slowly wind down with each passing day.

Cliff Palace in Mesa Verde NP on the Colorado Plateau. There are literally thousands of additional archeo sites in the general area. This is simply the most famous - and it is certainly visually stunning.
