Satoru forced his eyes open, though each blink felt weighted by endless days of fighting for survival on a dying Earth. Still, he pushed through the heaviness, desperate to find any trace of his senpai. His gaze sifted through the debris left by the sudden, brutal earthquake until it finally found her. Utahime lay still a few meters away, her body half-buried in rubble, dust clinging to her once-lustrous dark hair and streaking her pale face. Her hand stretched toward him, fingers splayed as if reaching out for a final touch, frozen in a silent plea. For once, the young man cursed his unnaturally sharp eyesight, for it made him see too clearly the heartbreaking truth: her chest lay motionless, no longer rising with the gentle rhythm of her breath. Satoru summoned every remaining ounce of strength, rolled onto his stomach, and began crawling toward her. He couldn’t feel anything in his lower body, yet he forced himself forward, dragging himself inch by agonizing inch to close the distance between them. But even his stubborn determination couldn’t overcome the gnawing exhaustion of days without food or rest, nor the brutal toll of his injuries. Soon, his body betrayed him, refusing to move, no matter how desperately he tried. With one last surge of strength, he stretched out his hand, his fingers brushing against her limp ones. Satoru clasped Utahime’s hand tightly in his, letting the warmth fade as he held on. And with that, he took one final breath.
