Labour MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge. Mum. Disability Activist. Jo Cox Women in Leadership. Yorkshirewoman.
I did it! 🎉🌊🥳

So proud to say that I completed my 7km swim today in 3 hours 50 mins, all to raise the money for a fully accessible changing room at Stocksbridge Leisure Centre.

It was a huge challenge and I’d love to reach our £7k target: www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/swim-penis...

It was wonderful to welcome Lucy Powell, our Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, to Wortley Hall for our Winter Fundraiser for our brilliant 2026 local candidates.

Thank you to Lucy for a terrific speech, all the Wortley Hall staff for looking after so well and Brass Band for entertaining us!

It was a pleasure to meet Joan - a regular user of our new 35 Hopper bus 🚌!

As she says “if you don’t use them, you lose them!”

With the Christmas season coming up, there’s a great opportunity for everyone to make the most of them 🎄🤶🎅

Sometimes I pinch myself... this week I got to meet the incredible Jacinda Ardern, former Prime Minister of New Zealand.

She was a beacon of hope and global leadership for me during the pandemic. The example she sets on compassionate politics is outstanding.

Each week of this Disability History Month I want to highlight people with disabilities throughout history who have inspired me.

I chatted about how Sheffield's very own Lord David Blunkett inspired me growing up on Matt Forde's podcast 👇

It always brings a smile to my face when I see people with limb difference represented, like this TFL poster I saw whilst heading back home from Parliament! 🚂

It’s incredible news that in repealing the Two Child Benefit Cap, lifting 450,000 children out of poverty, the Chancellor yesterday announced in the Budget that the vile “rape clause” will also be removed.

It is dehumanising, it is cruel and we will remove it from law.

I’m so proud that our Labour Government are removing the two child benefit cap from April - announced in today’s Budget.

This will lift over a massive 450,000 children out of poverty across the country.

This is the difference a Labour Government makes.

I dropped into Barnardos’ event in Parliament marking #NationalCareLeaversMonth to sign their Care Leavers pledge

Our Children and Wellbeing Bill takes an important step forward to bring forward to achieve the transformative change we want to see.

Today the Chancellor announced that the Labour Government is returning £2.3 billion to 40,000 former coal miners, coal board staff and their families.

We owe a debt of gratitude to these men and women who built and powered our country for generations.

Today is White Ribbon Day – an annual campaign day calling for the end of Violence Against Women and Girls.

It was great to sit down with my fantastic colleague Emily Darlington to hear more about why this day is so important.

One of the best parts of my job is sharing my passion for politics and public service with young people across our schools.

Ahead of UK Parliament Week, I spoke on Penistone FM about the opportunity for schools to see democracy in action down in Westminster.

With less than a week to go until I swim 7km for £7k, I spoke with Graham Silverwood, Chair at Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre – the place where my swimming journey began, and where I’m fundraising for a fully accessible changing room.

Today is the start of UK Parliament Week!

As the first MP for our constituency in 100 years to have grown up here, it's so important to me to use my position to help others from our communities engage with Parliament.

RAIL FARES FROZEN! 🚂❄️

The government are freezing rail fares in England next year for the first time in 30 years.

This fare freeze will directly bring down the cost of living, and make train travel more affordable.

Half a million more children will get access to Labour’s free breakfast clubs next year!

Applications have opened for the next wave of free breakfast clubs - I’ll be writing to all our eligible local primary schools to help and encourage them to apply for this next wave.

Prescription charges frozen! ❄️

Ahead of the Budget next week, the Government have announced they will freeze prescription charges next year – taking firm action to tackle the cost of living.

No one should put their health at risk because they can’t afford their medication.

This week, the Labour Government published England’s first ever Men’s Health Strategy – from cancer, to cardiovascular disease, and mental health.

For the first time we're taking comprehensive, coordinated action to address the specific health challenges facing men and boys.

Yesterday marked Carers Rights Day.

This year's theme is “Know your rights, use your rights”.

Everyday, 12,000 people become unpaid carers for a partner, family member, or a friend, often unaware of their legal rights and what support and benefits they’re entitled to.

Representation of disabled people in broadcast tv, both on and off screen, has doubled since 2018, as reported by the @tweetCDN.

Earlier this week, I raised in Parliament the need to go further, to double disability representation again, both on and off our tv screens.

Today is the start of Disability History Month.

It was wonderful to have Yasmina Bez with me on a work shadowing day in Parliament, who did an amazing job helping me with an Access Audit around Parliament.

This House belongs to all of us - I’ll do all I can to improve accessibility for everyone.

This International Men’s Day, I want to highlight the current 15.5% pay gap for disabled men – leaving them earning £4,000 less per year than non-disabled workers.

We know an unacceptable pay gap is also an acute problem for men with mental health conditions. 🧵

It was fantastic to celebrate the start of Disability History Month at a Reception at The Speaker’s House.

Looking forward to working with specialist Accessibility Arcitect, Rosie Scott, on some exciting projects soon.

It was a pleasure to host and speak in Parliament at the RNIB Visual Rehabilitation Reception yesterday.

When a person loses their sight, potentially suddenly and traumatically, the right support can mean the difference between isolation and independence, and ensure they can fulfil their potential.

My mum and dad taught me there’s no such word as can’t.

It was brilliant to chat to Matt Forde on his podcast about how that drives me now as an MP.
