The current political agenda will only cause increased suffering within an already traumatised and vulnerable population, who is being used as political pawns in a spectacle of performative cruelty. A truly dark point in history, and a time to hang our heads in shame. #StandWithRefugees

But 4 years on there are still no effective, safe legal routes. The obsession with ‘stopping the boats’ has erased the government’s last shred of humanity, compassion and basic human decency, pushing people to take even greater risks crossing the Channel.

Unless and until we address the root cause of what drives the proliferation of these crossing, deaths will continue to rise. There is no easy fix, and empty slogans will take us nowhere. Unless governments do better, we will continue to fail those who come to Europe in search of safety

The debate on small boats have been weaponised by politicians on both sides of the Channel with no real concern for human life. The empty rhetoric - such as “smash the gangs” feels like little more than a repackaged & regurgitated version of what came before

In the 3 yrs since this tragedy, people fleeing their homes have continued to die in the Channel, with 54 confirmed deaths in 2024 alone. Many more are missing. Victims are barely named anymore; their loved ones remain in the dark. The scale of human tragedy on the border is unfathomable
