🔑 Key findings:
• Nonviolent campaigns are more likely to foster democratization after 1900— but outcomes depend on who participates and what they want.
• Students, workers & intellectuals drive democratic change.
• Peasants, middle classes & militaries usually don’t.

We show:
• OMG covers pro-democracy, anti-liberal & pro-regime campaigns.
• Social bases are diverse—no group dominates > 1/8 of movements.
• Ideologies shifted: nationalism, conservatism, liberalism → socialism → democracy & human rights, with nationalism constant.

New paper alert 😄 ! Mauricio Rivera Celestino, Scott Gates and I have a paper out in the Journal of Conflict Resolution: lnkd.in/gzqYuTmN! The work began in 2017 as part of the Street-Level Autocrat project. Since then, children have been born, data collected, and now, the article is finally out:

This year's Nobel Peace Prize pays tribute to Narges Mohammadi and everyone championing women's rights, freedom, and equality across the globe. It is simply a beautiful recognition of her courage, the women dancing in the streets of Iran, and everyone boldly raising their voices against injustice.
