And for students in particular, networking doesn’t need to be formal. You can just approach a scholar and say how you appreciate their work. No other motive. The scholars interested in the next generation will often ask about your interests and connect you with people.

You don’t have to go to everything.
And many people feel awkward. You can go up to somebody and say “may I awkwardly join you“ especially at student events.

In September as I wandered alone before coffee around an empty-for-the-weekend office complex parking and no one knew where I was but Merlin said there were birds I had never seen…is when I realize I am probably ready to level up my bird watching.
