And for students in particular, networking doesn’t need to be formal. You can just approach a scholar and say how you appreciate their work. No other motive. The scholars interested in the next generation will often ask about your interests and connect you with people.

I wish I could have dinner with you this year Laura! But I may be heading up to BC in February for a weekend trip. :-)

You don’t have to go to everything.
And many people feel awkward. You can go up to somebody and say “may I awkwardly join you“ especially at student events.
