I'm a 40 something lesbian in love with silent films and all the flotsam, jetsam and minutiae that goes with it. Here I yap about it.
My alter-ego can be found at @margotmetroland.bsky.social, but she's too shy to be active much.
Hello darlings,

I'm sure no one's noticed but I've not been posting much of late. I just can't seem to get into the groove of posting whimsical yaps about silent pictures when the world is going to complete shit around my ears, and your ears too.

Last night I finally watched The Covered Wagon (1923). Disclaimer: I hate westerns, and that still goes after seeing this film. I grew up in Texas (but I've overcome that handicap) and westerns just bring back past trauma of idiots, lots and lots of idiots.
So why did I watch it?

I adore this.

The world being what it is, I am still not up to a heavy silent drama (which is a pity), so yesterday I watched Ernst Lubitsch's Die Austernprinzessin (The Oyster Princess) from 1919. It was, of course, great fun.
Long before Lubitsch went to Hollywood, he possessed the Lubitsch Touch.

This weekend I saw The Lodger (1927). While this isn't Alfred Hitchcock's first film, it could be thought of as the first Hitchcock film, as we define such a thing.
The plot features the love life of Daisy, a fair-haired English beauty, played by June Tripp, a fair-haired English beauty.

If it's good enough for Bill it's good enough for me.
I like this place,
And willingly could waste my time in it.

Hello darlings, I finally had a chance to watch another picture. I've been dealing with a lot of stuff lately and me time has been at a premium. And silent pictures are definitely me time, no one else will watch them with me. 🙂
I watched The Patsy, a Marion Davies vehicle. It was great!

As I said earlier, this weekend was set aside for Greed (1925). I hadn't seen it in years and was really looking forward to being Stroheimed. But the days ahead gifted me with an unbelievably shitty week that sapped my desire for hardcore silent drama. Sigh.

Alas my plan to watch the four hour version of Greed this weekend has gone awry. I have had such an amazingly shitty week that the idea of watching a four hour sermon on the depravity of man just didn't seem appealing for some reason.
In the end I watched Peter Pan, more on that later.

This weekend I plan on watching the four hour(!) version of Greed. All we really have is the 2 plus hour studio release, so the rest has been filled in with stills. I hope it's not AI. We will see. I may end up just watching the short version. Sigh.

Getting back to silents, last night's bill featured HE Who Gets Slapped (1924), starring Lon Chaney and directed by Victor Sjostrom (sorry, I seem to be fresh out of umlauts).
Much has been written all over the web about this picture, so I won't go too into much detail.

A bit off course but I had to yap about it anyway.
Last night I watched the pre-code talkie Fast and Loose (1930). It was Miriam Hopkins' first feature film and also had Carole Lombard and Frank Morgan in supporting roles.

I sometimes get the oddest posts by following #silentfilm. I would show you an example from today but, well, let's just not and say I did. 🤭
Though it's good to know my adult content is switched on to allow. 🙂

Hello darlings, my alter ego has been so busy with RL lately that she's been neglecting the emporium (bitch!).
Anyway, last weekend I watched a bit of German expressionist..fluff. Really! It was The Waxworks (1924) and it was the first time I'd seen it. It was not what I expected!

Yesterday I watched Rapsodia satanica, an Italian picture from 1917. It was made in 1915 but released two years later.
I saw this described as a masterpiece and I really disagree. On the surface it looks great, a female version of Faust, but looks aren't all they're cracked up to be.

I added this to the book pile and I'm very much looking forward to it. I only hope it doesn't dumb things down.

For folks who think "a face for radio and a voice for silent film" is the height of wit, I suggest you follow the Silent Film feed and see just how overused and lame your amazing bon mot really is.🙂

The NFL draft is taking up a lot of my time, but I did manage to watch Nana (1926) last night.
I thought I couldn't miss with a Jean Renoir film but even the best directors have to learn their trade, and Nana isn't quite there.
It was based on a Zola story, but meh.

To celebrate Harold Lloyd's birthday today I pulled one out of the vault and watched Grandma's Boy (1922).
It was Harold's first feature film and a big moneymaker for him. It's not one of my favorites but I thought it'd be fun, and I was right.

I spent yesterday evening with an old friend, F.W. Murnau's 1926 film Faust. It's everything a silent film should be; Beautifully filmed, excellent acting (no overacting) and a vibe that stays with you long after the film is over. It's a masterpiece and I love it. There's even boobs.

For last night's picture I moved from Germany to France, for a weird bit of fun called L'Atlantide(1921) from a novel by Pierre Benoit.
It's the story of two soldiers in North Africa who are captured by the queen of Atlantis. Yep, that's the plot.

I started Easter weekend with more German Expressionism, and boy was it expressed!
The film was the dark Von morgens bis mitternachts (1920) and it was visually stunning, in a most weirdly way.
