IF done well, fangames w/ level caps are just signalling that each encounter has been balanced around a particular level. They're puzzles to solve.

Even the official games (GSC notwithstanding) are pretty carefully balanced to never require grinding. Fangame battles are just harder puzzles.

One of my favorites in this vein was Silas Renn + Winter Orb + Arcbound Ravager. Sacrifice the Winter Orb in the end step prior to my turn so that it doesn’t affect me, then recast it from my graveyard during my turn so it’s back online before my next opponent’s turn.

Non-deterministic combo, extra turns, and decks that just spin their wheels and consume lots of game time taking tons of actions can also be a lot of fun to play but slow the game to a crawl for everyone else. Rashmi, Eternities Crafter + Seedborn Muse + High Fae Trickster is a great example.

STAX, in all its variants. It’s a lot of fun to solve the puzzle to create a boardstate where several factors prevent your opponents from taking any meaningful actions while you have the tools to turn off or work around enough of those usually-symmetrical restrictions to continue playing.

You’re also forgetting Starmie, whose BST is even higher tbh an Roserade’s.
