but there ARE courses, often your local authority adult ed department has the most affordable ones, though independent providers exist. Most college based ones are probably long gone, except the general intro to fashion/design type ones for BTEC/A level for pre-uni portfolio building.

Before the horrific cuts to adult education in 2010, for those out of work, sewing classes at FE colleges were about £30/term. I did ones on corsetry and using an overlocker. (I could already sew as my mum taught me) but learnt new skills and was more confident applying for a PGCE a year later. Now:

In terms of the Independent article, I've noticed rising prices on basic staples like canned beans, soy-milk, apples etc. I'm not even *struggling* so eating "healthy" and getting in five a day of fruit and vegetables (the bare minimum!) in a broken system is out of the reach of many many families.
