A few more of Kamille Bidan for good measure, plus a bonus Bright Noa and Four.

Totally! I recently picked up “The Captive of the Sahara” (1931) for the pulp art cover. It’s definitely got some Outdated Ideas, but the language is very beautiful. Today we would shelf this book next to other contemporary romance, but it stands out for its careful use of characterization.

Honestly, as a teen I could never draw his hair correctly. Even as an adult studying his design, it’s deceptively simple yet conveys a magnitude of volume and flow.

Shoutout to Nobuteru Yuki for being a master illustrator and character designer.

I love this interpretation of an obnoxious sports car. The over the top quality fits snugly into the brutish cityscape created by this movie’s sets.

It even has a cool, scary robot!

This year so far, the one to surprise me most is “Judge Dredd” (1995).

As a Dredd story it’s weird. However, the outlandish costumes, impressive practical effects and props, and city design is well worth the watch.

Type in the wild: Spiller Park Coffee - Atlanta, Georgia

Chunky typography does something for me.

Wild typography: Mister Softie

This truck rolled up, and I was treated to ice cream and some retro design. Gotta admit I like the white, blue, and red color scheme.

I love finding typography in the wild—especially if it’s hand painted.

The swash on the “d” is particularly delightful, no?

I can attest that they do. Mojito here has never passed judgement, and only asks for worm in return.

Spikey, fiery dragon Furby. He has a twisty tail like a funnel cake.

Not cotylorhynchus. He doesn’t judge others like that.
January 16, 2025 at 12:25 AM
It’s true, and our friend cotylorhynchus is at the top of that list.
January 15, 2025 at 10:40 PM
The fact that cotylorhynchus isn’t more frequently depicted and celebrated is a missed opportunity.

“Conclave” posits uncertainty and doubt as keystones to spiritual and personal progress, not as weakness or spiritual frailty. It really makes me sit back and wonder how I may be thankful for those parts of myself I consider flaws.

His brewing frustration hidden by his exhausted and humble demeanor provides all the tension to keep my interest the entire movie, yet there’s more! Beautiful shots and dramatic use of color and lighting are a treat. Lastly, the theme is thought provoking.

“Conclave” (2024) which follows the election of a new pope, stars Ralph Fiennes as a man who hates his job in Catholic upper management but is stuck in it because he’s good at it.
