Very belated reply, I haven't been on here for a while. I meant talk to the person who was maintaining the system before they were fired by the people who don't understand how the system works.

I'm no programmer, but it seems to me that the first order of business would be to talk to the people who actually understand how it functions and ask for clarification. Like, "hey, person who has been maintaining this system for a long time, how do you track where the payments go?"
