The MAC Puffinus project is co-funded by the European Union and Best Life 2030 and seeks to study the Manx shearwater’s ecology, monitor its nests and protect against predators in Macaronesia.

With the Funchal Ecological Park, we’re helping identify the Manx shearwater’s breeding areas in Madeira and have found three active nests so far! We’ve also deployed three GPS tags, so we know this subspecies travels between Madeira Island, the Desertas Islands and Morocco, up to 4,800 km!

Macaronesia is home to the pelagic seabird Manx shearwater (subspecies Puffinus puffinus canariensis). This long-lived and far-travelling seabird only comes to land for breeding and nests in burrows, which it visits at night. Perhaps you’ve heard its nighttime cackling, crooning and ‘coughing’?

So you think you’re faster than a snail?

Pelagic gastropods are slippery critters! Marine researchers have great difficulty in catching them in the open ocean – some liken it to trying to catch a fly in a jar…outside!

Did you know some #sea #spiders are actually #methane farmers?

Along methane seeps in the Pacific Ocean, tiny sea spiders of the genus 𝘚𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘢 grow special #bacteria right on their shells — bacteria that munch on methane, a powerful #greenhouse gas!
