IMHO STTMP was a masterpiece. As a long time fan of the TV series, it had been years since we'd seen an episode of the show, so the movie was much anticipated. Its difficult to express the joy it created on it's first screening. The homage to 2001 was genius. The only time any film ever got close.

In fact it is far more likely that the session band who played the rhythm for Leslie Kong's production of Monkey Man might have borrowed some of the melody to create their classic Reggae rhythm.

Shortning Bread is an old time traditional black folk song. It has no connection to Monkey Man apart from a common three chord rhythm pattern.
Wilson would have simply made a new version of a traditional arrangement that was public domain and needed no royalty payments or permission.
