TEN YEARS.

Ten years ago today, Batman co-creator Bill Finger’s life changed—41 years after he died.

DC Comics added his name to the Batman credit line—76 years after the character debuted.

And nine years after I began nudging, then pushing, for that.

1/2 On this solemn anniversary, a brief reminder of the good out there:

We lived in Manhattan on 9/11/01. Two nights later, till 1 am, we volunteered at a bustling donations tent on the closed road in front of the Javits Center.

Kwame Alexander convinced me to say yes to something I’d never done: join a writing retreat.

That alone was rewarding. But it was also a scouting-for-ghosts, scanning-for-Northern-Lights, sharing-home-cooked-meals, going-on-ice-cream-runs, watching-ST. ELMO’S FIRE retreat.

When giving credit where it’s due, does a single word make a difference?

When someone tells you no, that does not mean that they KNOW.

Thank you again to NAPHSIS for inviting me to give the opening keynote at your conference.

I often write/speak about legacy...and you are stewards of it.

Thank you, Catholic Library Association, for this humbling honor! I had a great time accepting the award and getting to know your community. FYI to others: that image on the award is not me.

1/3 NBC News asked me some questions at the Supreme Court inclusion rally. The short clip also includes someone from the opposing camp.

1/2 Uplifting stories are in high demand these days. Here's an unlikely one:

I realize most of you stopped watching SURVIVOR in 2002. It's on its 48th season, and a situation in this week's episode was one of the most moving things I've seen in recent memory...

When you feel a movie or a book lasts too long, you really mean it's boring.

Long things can be riveting, short things can be mercilessly dull.

Whatever the length of whatever you're making/doing, make it engaging throughout.

The fact that I remember the word "chernozem" from 1985 is but one small sign of his impact. So is this drawing I made of his inner sanctum at school, trademark pipe and all.

RIP Mr. Wyllie.

1/5 To put out a fire, Wagner Dodge STARTED a fire. Literally. 🔥

In 1949, in Montana, fifteen smokejumpers parachuted into a gulch around the Missouri River to fight a raging inferno. 🪂

The youngest was 17.

“Soon you can come to my house and my dad will smoke up some deer sausage.”

It doesn't get more memorable [or hospitable] than that.

“I liked how you had clarity, and great eye contact. Just keep on doing that and you won’t have anything to worry about.”

Sometimes the sagest advice comes from a 10-year-old.

"You are DaBomb dot com in real life."

I can't keep up with Gen Z slang so I'm choosing to believe this is a good thing.

1/4 This week, two weekly Manhattan institutions known for humor, @saturdaynightlive.bsky.social and @newyorker.com magazine, are celebrating anniversaries—50th and 100th, respectively.

Both have been significant influences on me going back to high school.

…he declared bankruptcy and spent 17 years paying it off.
…he lost an election for a seat in Congress. Five times.
…he lost an election as candidate for Vice President.

Four years later, Abraham Lincoln finally won something.

[Also: happy birthday.]
