awww, thanks Lauren! Also, absolutely wild that we started our first shows around the same time. It'll be ten years of Archive 81 in April, which is just... mind-boggling to think about.

And remember, if you like the show, it'd be incredible if you could leave a review wherever you listen to the podcast! Oh, and follow @dead-signals.bsky.social for more stuff!

Daphne Kinard does a wonderful job with building a character with no real scaffolding of backstory or history. And, as always, does some great stuff with the beaver trapping sounds. Take a listen open.spotify.com/episode/69hI...

Originally, Dan and I were going to slot this a bit later in the series, but we decided to go for a spookier ep in the second of the two episodes that would be released on launch day.

There's a connection that Mal builds with the unnamed spirit that (hopefully) feels unsettling and intimate at the same time. Plus, it's an opportunity to explore the early history of 'New Amsterdam', the absolutely wild beaver trade, and how legends from that time spread and become "truth."

For the second ep (Faded Spirit), we wanted to lean in to the wistful horror of it all, explore the nature of memory and identity.

Jack Calk did a great job playing the motorman, and Dan went went all out on the subway sounds - we wanted them to feel scary and musical. I think you'll really like it, so take a listen! Wherever you get your podcasts! open.spotify.com/episode/4kck...

I was really interested in the forgotten history of the Spanish flu, how it intersected and amplified a whole bunch of other historical events. And, for the pilot, we wanted to demonstrate that there's no holy water or anything Mal can use, he has to cajole, beg, trick, even threaten the spirits.

Episode One (The Motorman) was always the pilot script, and was inspired by the largest subway crash in American history, which happened like, really close to my actual subway stop! (About a hundred years since then, but still)
