While Turkish foreign policy is assumed to have transformed under the AKP, which triggered renewed activism in different regions of the world, the short-lived CHP government of 1978-79, at least rhetorically, also expressed a policy of establishing closer links with different regions:

Interesting how Nihat Erim, CHP MP and later Turkish prime minister, argued, in 1963, that Turkey's strategic importance has diminished after the Cuban missile crisis but that it will remain 'linked' to the West through its democratic regime (From M. Meclisi, B: 27 9.1.1963 O: 1, p. 649):
