This particular beleaguered parent wouldn’t say no to the excuse either, tbh.

The Social Democrats will be happy!

I mean, if we take the Burkean perspective on revolution, maybe.

This was the second and more formal occasion I had met MDH. The first was after at an event in the London Irish Centre just after the 2011 General Election when he was on a discussion panel. I was carrying a few pints through the crowd and almost sent him flying as he was holding forth, animatedly.

Oh, you’re right, I had forgotten he stepped down in before the 2011 GE.

I think he’s probably a recurring thorn in the side of the Labour leadership during austerity, so, but you’re probably right that he wouldn’t join another party.

And in this timeline, she doesn’t have the “Well, why should I vote for you when I can just vote for Michael D?” question.

Oh, there’s a thought. Does he resign the Labour whip at the same time as Róisín Shortall? In this timeline, does he wind up as a founder member of the SocDems?

Sinn Féin probably take it a bit more seriously. Is Liadh Ní Riada still the candidate? Or does she get a bit more of a hearing without MDH on the ballot paper?

I wonder. Assuming that the rest of the political landscape stays the same, it's the first election of any kind after Repeal. Without MDH as the incumbent, I wonder does someone try to tap into that energy?

You have me wondering now what #Áras18 would have looked like after a 7 year Gallagher Presidency

As do mine!

Alt: Oliver from the eponymous musical holds out his bowl pleadingly.

I’ve scrolled about three posts down the thread and people are already citing *checks notes* “sharing a bedroom with a sibling” as an example of childhood deprivation.

There’s an interesting sociolinguistics of sport branding study to be done some time on how we wound up with the GAA teams being called the Rebels, the camogie and LGFA teams being called the Rebelettes, and the soccer team being called the Rebel Army.

I’m not sure there’s a definitive answer to that! Certainly the Corrs cover versions were.
November 9, 2025 at 8:39 AM
I think there might be a generational thing where if you were a teenager in the 90s, your first exposure to Fleetwood Mac was through the Corrs covering half their songs, which I think did lead them to be written off as MOR a bit.

Although the ‘for’ does open up other possibilities.

P. FLYNN - TRY IT SOMETIME would have scanned better, but the tool doesn’t let you delete the ‘for’.
