Milly, from Trigun. The gentle, goofy giant was my favorite character from the show, and it’s a crime she wasn’t in Stampede.

This one started so well. I was actually quite enjoying it as it seemed like a love letter to classic resident evil. But after about a third of the way through, it became clear the game didn’t know *why* those mechanics work, and increasingly overstayed its welcome.

I really tried to give this one a chance. Gotham Knights (which did not make this list) felt like a good game trying to claw its way out of a rough one. This one feels like a bunch of competing mechanics all wrestling each other for dominance.

An older game I remember from my childhood. Mythological creatures invading modern day sounds like a fun, schlocky time. But the game’s extremely rough around the edges, capped off by a gamebreaking bug that makes reaching the final encounter impossible without modding the game.

I had high hopes for this, considering the same creator made The Mortuary Assistant. Individual parts could work, a maze, puzzles, a timer before you die that you can refresh, and a stalking monster. But all combined make a frustrating experience rather than a scary one.

A VR survival horror game with zombies sounds like a winning combo, and it could be if done right. Unfortunately, the game’s undying zombies only get back up when in swiping distance, making some damage feel unearned. It also ends abruptly, feeling unfinished.

I only wish I’d gotten to this one sooner. It has old school survival horror sensibilities and uses them well, while telling a creepy and heartbreaking eldritch horror/love story/tragedy. The analog, soviet-ish aesthetics in the visuals and audio really seal the unsettling vibe.

It was a tough call between this and The Bunker. It’s odd to see someone make a love letter to both Sesame Street and Resident Evil at the same time but it somehow works. It’s not a scary game, but it nails survival horror design while having a big heart.

Set in modern urban fantasy Seattle, you’ll be chatting and brewing for elves, orks, and succubi while they deal with their all too human problems. It’s an incredibly charming game with a gorgeous soundtrack. Just be wary streaming it on Twitch as the OST seems to attract ©️ flags.

This one managed to slide in just under the finish line. The combat is serviceable until it opens up later, but the main appeal is the surprising amount of heart and charm, to where the conversations are the main appeal. Just be warned: this game is BUGGY.

A surprise hit I stumbled on while going through my itch dot io library during Halloween, this lean walking sim about a girl returning to the site of a cult she was once lured into is simple but it works, and takes the time to show how someone’s life is affected afterwards.
