Opinions are my own

Bluesky doesn’t have multiple instances yet but when/if it does I hope this is something they work on.

Same thing for Threads from Meta.

Otherwise this space is super new. I wonder if one protocol/company will dominate this decentralized social network space.

I haven’t even talked about my main gripe though. Why can’t you get information from another instance directly from yours?

If I want to see which communities/people are in a Lemmy/Mastodon instance I have to manually go there!

Account migration is at least being worked on, but what about this?

These are just the Twitter alternatives. If we want talk about Reddit then the most relevant options are either kbin or Lemmy.

Lemmy suffers from the same problems Mastodon does but there you can’t even migrate accounts.

kbin, while a part of the fediverse, seems to be so much more centralized.

Mastodon has account migration but it’s far from easy or intuitive. Content is really spread out over multiple instances so sometimes it’s hard to find.

Nostr is the worst of them all. The only people there are Snowden, Jack Dorsey and a bunch crypto bros. Good luck finding them.

Bluesky seems to solve these major issues but, currently, it can’t scale fast enough. It’s also not a part of the fediverse.

Meta is launching Threads, which will connect to the fediverse, but I don’t see them making it easy for users to jump ship.

Fragmentation is another major problem.

Instances starts to defederate and users need to start jumping around instances (which isn’t intuitive) if they want to keep access.

Ignoring that getting into the fediverse is a bit overwhelming. You have to pick an instance so most people tend to default to the biggest one causing a centralization problem.

Doesn’t help that migrating instances isn’t exactly easy. (At least Bluesky tries to solve that!)

The biggest issue for any new platform is content. Most new ones simply do not have a user base as big as Twitter/Reddit so the communities and people you follow might not be there. I’d like to drop those big two but it’s hard when the content is there.
