The 1964 Civil Rights Act was signed into law today, 61 years ago. It marked the beginning of redress for hundreds of years of discrimination. The expectation was that we were on the path of building a truly inclusive democracy.

SCOTUS just green-lit book bans in schools across the country under the guise of freedom of religion. Our schools should be a place of acceptance and respect, not fear-mongering about the LGBTQIA+ community.

Today is the anniversary of Shelby v Holder when the US Supreme Court nullified an important provisions of the VRA, making it harder to challenge voting discrimination. The VRA put us on the path to being a true multi racial democracy. Congress needs to pass a fix so the VRA can do its job.
