I've always liked the dynamic pose. It was the face that dismayed me at first. I'm just grateful that the eyes aren't as (literally) empty as the earlier version that was considered. How "cranky" she looks seems to depend on the angle. I like this photo best.

This reminds me of this portrait purportedly of Jane Austen by James Stanier Clarke, librarian to the Prince Regent, who is known to have met Austen in 1815.

This sent me down a rabbit hole 🐇 Helen Sewell's artwork seemed familiar but not. I discovered that she was a children's book illustrator, with artwork that I'm sure I saw as a child (even though I don't remember these specific books). Thanks for the fun adventure!
