A critique of our paper on waterbird hunting at the Lake Miedwie Natura 2000 site has been published in Avian Research. We have submitted a scientific response clarifying methodological issues, data verification, and analytical scale. The data and evidence remain robust.

How do we verify the locations of hunting photographs published on social media? The key elements are persistent landscape features such as shoreline configuration, distinctive trees, piers, and reedbed structures. These same features can then be identified in the field and directly compared with photographs taken during fieldwork. Above are three examples of such locations at Lake Miedwie. On the left are fragments of images originating from social media (anonymised and used solely for illustrative purposes), and on the right are photographs taken by me in the field at the same locations. This is the approach used to verify the locations of the materials included in the analyses.

Our article presenting 24 years of waterbird monitoring on Lake Miedwie (NW Poland) by the West Pomeranian Nature Society has been published in BDJ. These data also supported a study showing that hunting waterbirds inevitably risks confusion with protected species.

🐦 A dataset presents waterbird count data from Lake Miedwie, north-western Poland, collected during the non-breeding season from 2002/2003 to 2024/2025, covering 23 seasons across 24 calendar years.
