Have you tried parlour style knitting holding the yarn continental style? That is the closest stance to crochet imo 🥲 (but yes, crochet is easier)

And the first he’d had where conscious, and it made Shiro squeeze him a little tighter.

- and a little higher. With a strangled yelp he moved Keith’s inquisitive little hands away, pulling him into a hug instead. Keith immediately tensed up, before relaxing into it with a shudder. Shiro reminded himself that this was only the second true contact with someone-

“You gotta warn me to hold my breath first Keith”

Suitably chastised, Shiro offered Keith his foot again. It was a little weird to be examined so closely, but they’d done the same to Keith so he supposed it was only fair. Not only his feet, but his legs also-

only creeped into his mind for half a second before he was stripping and climbing in. At first there was distance, until Keith cautiously approached. Quick as a flash he disappeared under water, upending Shiro and examining his feet. Panicking, Shiro wriggled away time the edge-

It didn’t help that Shiro was falling for this independent and charming merman, spending hours into the night talking. Keith always liked touching his hands, sharp claws tracing his cuticles with utmost care. When Keith asked “Will you swim with me?” thoughts of drowning sailors-

The decision was easy, reconfigure the Atlas, fill corridors with salt water to allow Keith to explore, install clear pipes so he could swim between levels. It took a little planning, but his crew were on board. Keith was a little rough but ultimately good and surprisingly loyal-

But Keith shakes his head. Pollution and acidic water, scraps and solitude was no comparison to being able to see the sky from the window, to have skin that didn’t ache and actual fresh food. And it was Shiro’s ship. He was ultimately responsible for deciding Keith’s fate-

Learned English himself from billboards, Shiro’s heart breaks. Keith survived on scraps of garbage dropped from the above world. Perhaps there used to be large communities of merpeople, but Keith didn’t know them. “Do you want to go back?” It wasn’t the biggest pool in the world-
March 1, 2024 at 10:00 PM
It always strikes Shiro just how unusual the name Keith is, until he finds out where it comes from - digiboard advertisements of cowboy Keith’s luxury brand artificial beef, the same way the merman learned to speak English. He had no name, no family, raised himself-

“My name is Shiro, by the way, what’s yours?” he offers with a smile, dropping it when he only receives a stare. Recognising a lost battle he turns to leave - at least he’s not being drowned. But as he’s leaving, hand on the door he hears a quiet “Keith”-

So they size each other up for a while, and Shiro breaks first “You’re healing up well, I’m guessing getting scooped up by an ATLAS class airship wasn’t on your plans, sorry about that”

The man waves his hand, light catching the webbing between his fingers and Shiro gulps-

Shiro is used to dealing with sky pirates, so he’s sure he can handle himself in combat, but usually his opponents are land based. And to tell the truth, he doesn’t want to fight this man, he’s stunning. Which is surprising, because Shiro never considered himself into tails-
March 1, 2024 at 9:58 PM
Shiro can’t stop visiting, watching behind closed doors and glass screens, until the merman asks him “why do you watch me?” And Shiro can’t really lie and pretend he hasn’t been. So he enters. The merman seems hostile, but it’s cautious hostility-
March 1, 2024 at 9:57 PM
So his team try and save the merman, filling the staff pool with pure salt water to keep him in, unsure of how safe it is to treat him - those teeth look sharp, after all. But over time he heals. His face scars, but his ulcers smooth, and his tail regains a vibrant hue-

Shiro orders for the medical team to come down to engineering, “Now!” Because of his crew standing around in shock. The medical team have to work around him cradling the fish man, reluctant to hand him over. His uniform is ruined, but it doesn’t matter, he needs to keep him safe-

The tail he’s supporting, limp and covered in smooth slippery skin like a dolphin, dull red and sunburned in patches extending from his stomach, teeth sharp, indigo eyes, everything about him screams inhuman. But his eyes are afraid, terrified, but too weak to fight back-
March 1, 2024 at 9:56 PM
The ulcers look mostly old, and he has the sticky, smelly coating of the sea covering him. The cut on his cheek is fresh, extending to his shoulder, a result of the turbines probably, he’s lucky to be alive. Though Shiro doesn’t know what luck is now - this person is not a human-
March 1, 2024 at 9:55 PM
When Shiro gets a call from engineering that they’ve got a person sized object in the desalination tanks Shiro is expecting a murder victim or trashdummy, and not a sickly, ulcer-covered, and still surprisingly alive human coughing up water. Nor the tail that comes out with him-
March 1, 2024 at 9:55 PM
Turned the water into a thick and soupy stagnant mess, for the most part the sea is dead, and has been for a long time. So skimming water for ultrasonic desalination and hydrogen separation is usually a stress free process, standard procedure. Until the Atlas scoops up a body -

A big hc I have is that a lot of earth tech in VLD uses water as fuel, and so an au where Shiro is a sky pilot on a big sky ship transporting expensive goods from floating city to floating city, well they have to obtain water from the murky below. Pollution in the sea already -
