Made it to #ecprgc25! Beautiful location amongst great discussions in the @sgparliaments.bsky.social panels! Looking forward to catching up with the SG on Knowledge and Governance later too!

Really fascinating findings here from @jamesweinberg1.bsky.social about how prepared freshly politicians feel for their new jobs…

At another excellent parliaments panel featuring great colleagues! @jamesweinberg1.bsky.social in action presenting his latest project on mental health of politicians #psa25

I made it! And straight into an excellent @psa-parliaments.bsky.social panel on parliamentary reform and public engagement! #psa25

In true #psa25 tradition, I am finalising my presentation on the train down and have changed the title from that in the programme

Hello to all the new people on Bluesky! I usually post about academic research on parliaments, European politics (mostly the UK and a bit of Germany), or higher education. But as it’s Sunday, here is a picture of my 6-month puppy, Merlin, to get you started.

😯 fair point… here he is!

Yes I’ve got Excel open and I’m analysing footnotes in a parliamentary report BUT: my puppy is resting at my feet, the sun is shining, and I can see Edinburgh castle from my window as I’m coding. I got lucky today.

Packed room to hear from @samfriedman.bsky.social and @aaronreeves.bsky.social about their new book “Born to Rule” - fascinating data on both the stability of elites and elite wealth, and the changing way elites are presenting themselves to emphasise greater “ordinariness”

Last night I got to see the Northern Lights from my flat window. Truly magical.

Strange headline given the distribution of chairs was allocated to Labour before the elections took place…

Day 54 of having a puppy
September 2, 2024 at 8:02 AM
Cool to be sat in the Scottish Parliament chamber with @merylkenny.bsky.social for the closing panel discussion of the Parliament’s Festival of Politics, reflecting on 25 of devolution

Taking pictures with Merlin not as easy as I had hoped

Day 37 of having a puppy
August 16, 2024 at 10:17 AM
His name is Merlin, a 15-week old Pomeranian! I will be posting a lot about him on here in the coming months 😉

This has been how I’ve felt every day since we got a puppy. Excited but no idea what I’m doing (despite reading four puppy guides and constantly on puppy Reddit pages).
August 15, 2024 at 10:17 AM
So my summer involved getting a puppy, who has thrown my life into disarray (in a sort of good way). Meet Merlin. A political-scientist-in-training, I assure you.

Almost completed my holiday reading ahead of the Study of Parliament Group’s annual conference in Oxford later this week - excited to hear from all three authors on Friday!

Of course I had to finish my last day in the Bundestag with a parliamentary currywurst

More snowy Bundestag!
