Belém (Brazil) has a city population of around 1.5 million and a metropolitan population of about 2.2 million.
So, in UK terms:
• only a handful of cities are larger by city-proper population, and
• a few more are larger by metro-area population.

Indeed. Recent work in Brazil, has shown that the Cerrado savanna lost 1/3 of its 200 million ha in the last 40 years alone. Adding to what was previously lost, there’s less than 50% now.
I made this map with available data in 2010, showing deforestation until 2008, already 1/2 lost.
